We ensure that girls impacted by maternal incarceration are seen and supported. Our activities for girls are embedded within two main program areas:
Pearl Program (Building the Mother-Daughter Bond): through our partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), GEM provides monthly enhanced visitations between incarcerated women and their daughters. This program currently serve girls whose mothers are incarcerated in Gatesville, Texas.
Diamond Program (Empowering Girls to Make Positive Life Choices): through monthly workshops, quarterly events, and an annual summer camp, GEM provides supportive and empowering all-girl settings for girls in grades K-12 impacted by maternal incarceration. Not only do these activities enhance the value of peer understanding and build community among girls who have shared experiences, they also build their confidence and self-esteem, help them to discover their leadership and communication strengths, establish cognizance of health and wellness, and build positive relationships. Through the strengthening of their moral character, exploring their expressive powers, and learning about the importance of engaging in service to others, girls thrive physically, emotionally and intellectually.
